With the government shutdown threatening SNAP (food stamp) benefits for millions of families, including over 37,000 residents in Lake County alone, I felt I had to act. As the founder of Fed Up With Hunger, I’ve seen firsthand how delays or cuts to SNAP strain local food pantries like Vernon Township Pantry, St. Joseph’s Pantry, and Northern Illinois Food Bank, which has already reported a 25% increase in demand.
To raise awareness and urge action, I sent letters to Senators Tammy Duckworth and Richard Durbin, Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Brad Schneider, and Illinois State Representative Nabeela Syed. I asked them to protect SNAP, support food banks that fill the gap during delays, and speak out so families know their rights. Policy change starts with conversations—and I’m proud to use my voice to start one.
